International Health Insurance VS Travel Insurance: Which to Choose?

Updated: Oct 12, 2022

With international borders opening up again, a significant number of people are starting to make plans for holidays. Similarly, firms are once again engaging in discussions regarding overseas expansion.

Travelling is back in business again! Unfortunately, however, with the increasing number of travelling taking place, the number of COVID-19 cases is bound to rise, meaning that we are now extremely vulnerable to catching the virus. And with the usual threats to health and safety around, our healthcare risks are more significant than ever.

When we travel overseas, it is crucial that we protect our health and safety. People usually think of getting travel insurance to get this protection. However, many of these individuals do not realize that international healthcare insurance is also an option for them to choose.

With all that said, how is travel insurance different from international healthcare insurance? And which of the two should you pick?

The Main Differences

Travel Insurance

International Healthcare Insurance

Used for trips abroad, in that specific location that you are travelling to

Used for medical coverage either worldwide, or certain regions

Covers emergency medical costs that might arise when travelling

Does not cover travel-related accidents

Coverage is limited, as stated for the policy chosen

Coverage provides for comprehensive healthcare benefits in emergency and non-emergency situations

With Travel Insurance Only:

In the case of hospitalisation, you can only make a claim for emergency hospital treatment. However, upon your return to Singapore, you may not be able to make claims for medical treatments.

With International Health Insurance:

The choice of additional dental and maternity dental cover is there for you, and it is available no matter where you are. Moreover, you can be sure that both emergency and non-emergency medical costs are covered.

How to Decide Between These Two Insurance Types?

1. Are you relocating? Or are you just taking a prolonged single trip?

If you are moving to another country for the long term, international healthcare insurance can provide you with comprehensive healthcare coverage for a duration of more than 90 days. In contrast, if you are only staying for a short while over a period of less than 90 days, travel insurance is sufficient.

2. Where is the location throughout the year?

If you are overseas a lot throughout the year, a more comprehensive plan may be more suitable for you. Choose international healthcare insurance to be safe.

3. How much coverage do you need?

As mentioned previously, international healthcare insurance is more comprehensive, whereas travel insurance only offers emergency coverage for your healthcare needs.

4. How much is your budget?

Travel insurance is much more affordable than international healthcare insurance. So, if you are on a tight budget, Travel insurance is the way to go.
