Many people believe that "money can't buy happiness", and they continue living their lives without saving and making financial plans. Although it is true that some forms of happiness cannot be bought - like the experience of meeting a loved one that has passed on - there are still many types of happiness we can buy.
When accidents happen, you will still need money to ensure a long and healthy life. With money we can pay for better healthcare, faster care, better diagnoses, and even coverage that insurance cannot cover.
Moreover, eating cheap food is often very unhealthy. It is usually those that are better off financially that can afford to eat healthily on a day-to-day basis. Beyond diet, those that have more money can afford gym memberships, time off work, sports equipment, and many other luxuries that allow them to stay healthier than those that are less privileged.
All of us have dreams, but what does it take to make these dreams a reality? Often times, it requires a lot of money for us to fulfil our dreams. For instance, if your dream was to open a restaurant, you will have to consider the price of paying for staff, bills, space, facilities, your own needs and your family's needs. If you were to have less money than what is needed to build a sustainable business, you are highly likely to fail, and therefore suffer huge financial losses!
Some find that they are extremely happy living with a low-paying job. It is good that these individuals are happy, but the reality is that we are all living in an expensive country with high costs of living. An average worker in Singapore can earn enough to take care of his/her parents now. However, can this worker do the same in 20-30 years when she is nearing retirement? Most likely not.
Everyone has different definitions of happiness. In order to achieve happiness, we have to first set a price to our own individual definition of happiness. If your dream is to own a landed property and a car, the price of your happiness would be around $5 million.
For the other forms of happiness that money cannot buy, we can either choose to find other ways to achieve this happiness, or accept that this happiness cannot be attained.
